BACKGROUND OF THE PURNIMA
In a country where the population grapples with the harsh realities of poverty, illiteracy, compromised health, unemployment, premature mortality, and the unforgiving forces of nature such as droughts, floods, and excessive rainfall, the challenges seem insurmountable. The dire lack of resources to offer proper care, coupled with environmental degradation due to unchecked exploitation, has left the populace struggling for necessities such as food, shelter, and well-being. The aspirations of the youth for a peaceful life have been derailed, and the nation’s economy hangs in the balance. Amidst this turmoil, NGOs have emerged as beacons of hope, working alongside government initiatives to reshape the destiny of these nations.
One such ray of hope is “PURNIMA” (Means – Full Moon) a non-profit organization that has been a steadfast companion in the journey towards socio-economic development since its inception in 1980. With an unwavering commitment to fostering civil society and community growth, “PURNIMA” stands as a testament to dedication and empathy. Its primary focus lies in uplifting the marginalized segments of society, including the impoverished, women, youth, and minorities. Recognizing that progress is not just a desire, but a necessity, “PURNIMA” has undertaken multifaceted initiatives to address the pressing issues that hinder the nation’s advancement.
Officially registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare in 1981 and sub sequently with the NGO Affairs Bureau of Bangladesh in 2002, “PURNIMA” has solidified its position as a legitimate and accountable entity. The organization’s approach to change is deeply rooted in practicality and compassion, demonstrated through its various outreach programs that span the spectrum of societal needs.
During times of natural calamities, such as Flash Flood, Tidal surges, and TS Cyclone, Floods as well as Man-made disasters like the massive Rohingya refugee influx and Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN’s) from Myanmar in 2017; PURNIMA swiftly stepped into action, offering aid to victims and distributing essential items like Hot meal, General food distributions, Hygiene kits, NFI items warm clothing to the most vulnerable and people in need and impoverished and widowed. Education, a cornerstone of progress, remains a priority. The organization actively provides books to underprivileged students, recognizing that knowledge is the key to empowerment and transformation.
The empowerment of women, a vital catalyst for change, is a realm were “PURNIMA” shines remarkably. Through skill development initiatives, especially in fields like Crafting, Tailoring, and any other skills development as per demand or needs and adult education programs, it equips helpless and distressed women with the means to secure a better future for themselves and their families. By fostering skills and knowledge, “PURNIMA” aims to break the cycle of vulnerability that has ensnared so many.

Through campaigns and educational efforts, the organization strives to enlighten communities about these threats and promote more sustainable practices.
The organization’s dedication doesn’t wane even during religious observances. During Ramadan or Qurbani program, “PURNIMA” takes upon itself the responsibility of providing balanced diets to those fasting, both in urban centres and rural areas. This act of compassion reflects the organization’s understanding of the intersection of religious devotion and the basic need for sustenance.
The name “PURNIMA,” signifying a full moon, is a metaphor for its mission – to bring light to the darkness in people’s lives. This metaphor extends beyond the symbolic, as the organization actively engages in initiatives that illuminate paths toward progress. Just as the full moon’s radiance pierces through the night sky, “PURNIMA” strives to break through the barriers of poverty, ignorance, and despair, letting hope and opportunity shine on the lives of those it touches.
“PURNIMA” emerges as a stalwart agent of change, working tirelessly to reshape the trajectory of its nation’s development. Amidst the shadows cast by poverty, illiteracy, health crises, and environmental degradation, this non-profit organization stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and concerted effort. Its multifaceted approach, encompassing education, skill development, awareness campaigns, and immediate relief, paints a holistic picture of its commitment to catalyzing positive change. With each endeavor, “PURNIMA” embodies the essence of its namesake, becoming a luminous beacon of hope, much like a full moon in the dark sky endeavor.
