MR. M. A Razzak was a shining symbol of a life devoted to humanity and selfless service. As a dedicated social worker and conscious journalist, he spent his entire life standing beside the neglected, marginalized, and oppressed people of society.
He was born in 1947 in Dumuria Upazila of Khulna District, Bangladesh, into a respected family. His mother was Johura Begum, and his father, Abdul Majid Sardar, was a professional lawyer. His elder brother, Abdur Rauf, was also a renowned lawyer of his time. Following his family’s academic tradition, he completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from BK School in Khulna, Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from college, and Bachelor of Arts from Khulna BL College. Later, he obtained an LLB degree. However, instead of pursuing a career in law, he chose to dedicate himself to serving humanity.
At the beginning of his professional life, he worked at Khulna Municipality and also spent a short period abroad. Nevertheless, his deep love for his homeland and its people repeatedly brought him back to Bangladesh. While he was engaged in export-import business both locally and internationally, his commitment to humanitarian service never diminished.
Supporting people during winter by distributing blankets, providing relief to flood-affected communities, and ensuring food support for hungry children were not merely activities for him—these were his true sources of inspiration and joy. Driven by this humanitarian vision, he founded the non-governmental development organization “Purnima” in 1980. Since its inception, the organization has been working under the guiding principle: “Dedicated for Serving Humanity since 1980.”
To him, Purnima was not just an organization; it was his dream, his philosophy of life, and a lifelong commitment to unconditional service for humanity. He played a vital role in agricultural development, ensuring safe food production, and improving the livelihoods of farmers and fish cultivators.
In post-independence Bangladesh, when the country was struggling with famine, drought, floods, malnutrition, and health crises, he worked tirelessly for more than four decades with the support of government and international donor agencies to serve humanity. Through his dedication, sacrifice, and visionary leadership, Purnima continues to shine as a beacon of hope and service.
In his family life, he and his wife, Majeda Razzak, were proud parents of two sons and one daughter. During his lifetime, he decided to hand over the responsibility of his dream institution to the next generation. Accordingly, in 2016, he entrusted the organizational leadership of Purnima to his only daughter, Ms. Nasreen Razzak, ensuring that his vision and mission would continue to grow under new leadership.
He passed away on January 26, 2023. However, his work, ideals, and humanitarian values remain alive in every initiative of Purnima and in the hearts of countless people.
The Purnima family remembers this great social worker with deep respect, love, and gratitude.
Dr. Nasreen Razzak is a dedicated development practitioner, social worker, and a symbol of compassionate and humanitarian leadership. She was born in 1975 in the Nirala residential area of Khulna, Bangladesh. She is the eldest among three siblings and grew up in a family deeply rooted in social service and humanitarian values. Her father, the late Mr. M. A. Razzak, was the Founder and Former Executive Director of Purnima, and her mother, Sajeda Razzak, played a significant role in shaping her moral and social values.
Growing up in a family environment committed to social welfare, she developed a strong passion for serving humanity from an early age. Her father’s humanitarian vision and life philosophy deeply influenced her and guided her professional journey.
In her academic life, she completed her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 1990 from Government Coronation Secondary Girls’ School and her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in 1992 from Government Pioneer Women’s College. She later obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from B.L. College, Khulna.
She began her professional career by working with the Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum from 2001 to 2005, where she contributed to child rights and social development initiatives. Later, she worked for a period in a house development firm. Driven by her deep interest in serving people, she pursued studies in homeopathic medicine and obtained a DHMS degree from Dhaka, after which she engaged herself in providing homeopathic healthcare services.
She formally joined Purnima in 2016 and currently serves as the Executive Director of the organization. Under her leadership, Purnima continues to move forward with strong commitments to humanitarian values, transparency, and sustainable development, particularly in the areas of agricultural development, food security, healthcare, and social protection.
Dr. Nasreen Razzak remains committed to carrying forward her father’s vision and ideals, leading Purnima with dedication and responsibility to serve humanity and support the next generation of development initiatives.
She continues to work tirelessly beside the people, for humanity.
